Irregular Mirrors

Irregular-shaped mirrors are a contemporary category that's matured beyond trend status in NZ interiors. The organic curve, the wavy silhouette, the asymmetric edge — these shapes started appearing in designer interiors around 2019-2020 and have since moved from trend-driven feature to established decorative vocabulary. Museums have used irregular-shaped framing devices for centuries (Art Nouveau, Surrealism, Japanese wabi-sabi), so the aesthetic vocabulary has deep roots. What changes is the execution. Irregular mirrors in ornate gold gilt read as Art Nouveau revival; in frameless minimalist form they read as contemporary art. For long-term value, we recommend frameless or understated framed irregulars (our Cascade X is the most timeless because the shape speaks for itself without a frame finish that might date). The shape itself is here to stay; frame trends come and go.

Cheval has a WHITE velvet frame — not black. This has been a common source of confusion because earlier product photos were lit darkly and read as grey-black. The actual frame material is a cream-white velvet wrap over the curvy irregular profile, which gives it a soft tactile quality different from our hard-edged aluminium or PS frames. The velvet catches light differently from every angle, so the frame appears pale cream in natural daylight, warm ivory under incandescent lighting, and cooler under overhead LEDs. At 190 x 90cm and 29kg, Cheval is designed as a wall-mount or floor-lean statement piece in bedrooms, dressing rooms, and feminine-coded interiors. The white velvet pairs especially well with ivory walls, soft pink bedding, brass hardware, and other tactile fabrics. Black velvet would be a different product entirely.

No — Nova is freestanding only. The mirror ships with a permanently-attached kickstand on the back, designed so it stands upright on the floor without needing to lean against a wall. The stand mechanism is engineered to support the 160 x 60cm wavy silhouette at a safe angle, and there is no built-in wall-mounting hardware or hanging point. Why we designed it this way: the irregular wavy shape only reads correctly from a specific angle, and the built-in stand locks that angle. Leaning Nova against a wall like a standard floor mirror would flatten the wavy profile visually and the stand would still be visible from the side. For a wall-mountable irregular mirror, Cascade X (200 x 100cm, frameless) or Cheval (190 x 90cm, white velvet) are the right picks — both can lean or be securely wall-mounted with included hardware. Nova is for rooms where a standalone sculptural mirror is the goal.

Cascade X is our largest irregular mirror at 200 x 100cm. It's a frameless design with polished edges and a flowing organic silhouette — the edge curves inward and outward gently rather than forming straight lines, which gives it a sculptural feel without being aggressively abstract. Weight is 32kg thanks to 10mm MDF backing that stabilises the glass at that size and prevents flex around the irregular edges. Cascade X works best as a statement piece in larger rooms — living rooms with tall walls, main bedrooms, open-plan entryways, or hallways with enough breathing room for the shape to be appreciated. At 200cm tall it requires 220cm minimum ceiling clearance for leaning, or secure wall-mounting into studs. Below Cascade X, Cheval sits at 190 x 90cm and Nova at 160 x 60cm — all three cover different sizes and roles within the irregular category.

Irregular mirrors can work beautifully in minimalist rooms — they often look their best there — but the rule is one irregular mirror per room, maximum. Minimalism's core principle is restrained forms, so a single sculptural mirror acts as the deliberate exception that proves the rule. The mirror becomes the one curved, organic, sculptural object in a room otherwise composed of straight lines, neutral tones, and empty space. This is why frameless irregulars (Cascade X) tend to outperform heavily-framed ones in minimalist settings — the frame would add visual weight and compete with the architectural restraint of the room. Cheval works in minimalist bedrooms because the white velvet frame is tonal rather than contrasting. Nova works in minimalist studios or sunrooms as a standalone sculptural object. Avoid pairing irregular mirrors with other irregular or organic objects in minimalist rooms — one shape anchor is enough.

No — the reflection inside an irregular-shaped mirror is perfectly flat and undistorted, the same as any rectangular or round mirror. Distortion would only occur if the glass surface itself were curved or warped, which is not the case with any C&F mirror. What changes is the FRAMING of the reflection. Because the glass edge follows the irregular silhouette, the reflection you see is cropped to that shape — your full-length reflection appears within a wavy or curved border rather than within straight edges. The effect is similar to viewing a portrait inside an organic frame versus a standard rectangle: the image itself is identical, but the eye interprets the frame shape as part of the composition. All our mirror glass is 4mm ultra-clear (Cheval and Nova) or 4mm double-silver (Cascade X), both of which give true-colour, undistorted reflection across the entire surface.
