Mirror size questions, answered

How tall should a full length mirror be?

For most adults, a full length mirror should be at least 140 cm tall to show the body comfortably. The sweet spot for NZ homes is 160 to 180 cm, which covers nearly all household members and suits the 2.4 m standard ceiling. Taller mirrors (190 to 220 cm) work in villas, hallways and walk in wardrobes with higher ceilings.

What width should a mirror above a dresser or console be?

Use the two thirds to three quarters rule. A mirror hanging above furniture should be between 2/3 and 3/4 the width of the furniture below it. So a 120 cm wide dresser pairs best with a mirror 80 to 90 cm wide. Anything narrower looks undersized; anything wider overhangs and feels top heavy.

How high should I hang a mirror?

Centre the mirror at eye level. For an average NZ household, that is about 160 cm from the floor to the centre of the mirror. For a tall household, move the centre up to 165 cm. For a shorter household or children, drop to 145 to 150 cm. When the mirror sits above furniture, leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the mirror.

Can I hang a heavy mirror on plasterboard in a NZ home?

Yes, but the anchor has to match the weight. For mirrors under 15 kg, plasterboard toggle anchors rated to at least twice the mirror weight are safe. For 15 to 30 kg mirrors, always fix into a timber stud. For anything over 30 kg — including the Grandeur, Aldren and Louis ranges — use stud mount plus reinforcement, or lean the mirror on the floor instead. Studs in NZ homes are usually at 600 mm spacing. Use a stud finder before drilling.

Does the wall size limit how big a mirror can go?

Yes. A mirror should not take up more than about 75% of the visible wall width, and leave at least 15 cm of clearance from side walls, doorways or ceilings. Oversized mirrors on narrow walls look crowded; they also reflect the ceiling or floor awkwardly because there is no room to balance them.

Do freestanding mirrors need to be anchored?

Floor leaning mirrors should be anchored to the wall with the safety strap supplied by the manufacturer. Under NZ consumer safety guidance, any mirror over 20 kg that is not permanently fixed should use an anti tip strap. This prevents accidental tipping from knocks or curious children and pets. All C&F mirrors 20 kg and above ship with the appropriate strap.
