Arched Mirrors

Arched mirrors suit almost every NZ home style, but they work hardest in homes with one existing curve somewhere — an arched doorway, a bay window, coved ceilings in a villa, a rounded dining table, or curved furniture. The new arch finds its partner and the two shapes rhyme. In purely modern, all-rectangular homes, an arched mirror plays a different role: it becomes the single soft geometry in a room full of right angles, which prevents the space from feeling clinical. The curve gives the eye somewhere to rest. It's harder to go wrong than you might think. The only home style where arched mirrors struggle is ultra-minimalist rooms with deliberate single-shape geometry. Anywhere with mixed materials or softness, an arched mirror fits.

Titan and Titan X are both 180x80cm arched mirrors, but they're built for different jobs. The base Titan has a 30mm black aluminium alloy frame, 3mm ultra-clear glass, weighs 19kg, and comes with a stand included so it can freestand, lean, or wall-mount. Titan X is the premium version at 180x80cm with a thicker 32mm black aluminium frame, 4mm double-silver glass for a brighter sharper reflection, weighs 16kg, and has MDF backing for added stability. Titan X does not come with a stand — it is designed to lean or mount. Both are verified best sellers. The choice comes down to three questions: do you need a stand (Titan yes, Titan X no), do you want the thicker X-series frame, and do you want double-silver glass for brightness?

They do not — they complement it. Modern NZ builds lean on straight-line geometry, flat surfaces, rectangular windows and clean-line furniture. When everything in a room is straight-edged, the space can start to feel austere. An arched mirror introduces one soft curve without competing with any architectural feature, which lets everything rigid around it feel deliberate rather than severe. The trick is to treat the arch as the single decorative softening element. One arched mirror in a modern room works. Two arches facing each other can feel repetitive. Pair the mirror with one other rounded element — a table lamp, a small vase, a rounded ottoman — and the room gets a quiet harmony without looking themed. Architect-designed modern homes often specify arched mirrors for exactly this reason: to avoid a room that is too sharp.

Louis is our largest arched mirror at 220 x 120cm. It weighs 45kg and has a 33mm black aluminium frame with 5mm double-silver glass — the same glass specification we use on our premium rectangular mirrors. Louis is designed as a flagship statement piece: entryway hallways, main living rooms with tall ceilings, or large bedrooms where the mirror anchors one wall. For a smaller statement, the Grandeur range (Aurelia, X, Alba) comes in at 200 x 100cm with 5mm glass and around 42kg. These fit most standard Kiwi ceiling heights (2.4 metres minimum) without feeling oversized. The standard arch sizes are 180 x 80cm (Titan range, Arcadia X) and compact 160 x 60cm (Svelte range). Louis and Grandeur both require two people to lift and need secure floor-lean placement or proper wall mounting.

The curve adds about 15-20cm of height compared to a rectangular mirror of the same width, so clearance matters. For a 180cm arched mirror (Titan range), you need at least a 200cm door opening to carry it through without tilting — most standard NZ internal doors are 1980cm high, which is enough but not comfortable. For ceilings, the rule is: leave at least 10cm of clearance between the top of the arch and the ceiling when leaning or mounting. A 180cm arched mirror in a 2.4m-ceiling room sits with 60cm clearance, which is ideal. In a lower-ceiling home (2.1m or 2.2m, common in older bungalows), drop to the 160cm Svelte range instead. For villa homes with 2.7m or higher ceilings, any size works, and Louis at 220cm still leaves half a metre above it.

Arched mirrors are not a trend — they are an architectural primitive. The Romanesque arch predates the modern rectangle by a thousand years as a decorative element, and arched mirrors have been a quiet interior staple since the 1800s, showing up in Georgian, Victorian, Art Deco, mid-century, and now contemporary interiors. What shifts is the frame. Gold arched mirrors (our Aurelia range) had a mainstream moment around 2020-2022. Black frames (X range) took over 2023-2025 as the default. White (Alba range) is growing now, especially in Scandi-influenced and coastal homes. The frame finish moves with style cycles. The arch shape itself does not. If you are worried about buying into a moment, choose a neutral frame finish — black is safe in any era, and frameless or thin aluminium will not date. The curve will outlast the frame trend either way.
