Dust is the main thing: a quick pass with a soft brush or a vacuum upholstery tool every couple of weeks keeps it off the weave, and a barely damp cloth lifts the odd smudge. Avoid soaking the shade and let it dry naturally, and it will keep its colour and soft glow for years in an NZ home.

Linen has a visible, slightly irregular weave that gives a natural, textured look and a warm diffused light. Cotton is smoother and more uniform, so it takes pleating well and spreads a clean, even glow. Polyester is a synthetic fabric that holds a crisp shape, resists creasing and is often used for pleated shades. All three soften light nicely; the choice mostly comes down to the texture you prefer.

Far less than with old style incandescent bulbs. A modern LED runs much cooler and gives off comparatively little heat, and drum and column shades let air move through, so the shade should only feel mildly warm in normal use. Bulbs are not included, so choose an LED and follow the globe guidance on each product page.

For a bedroom you want soft, low glare light, and a beige linen shade is the gentle option: the Marceau drum or the taller Chandelle column both cast a warm wash that is easy on the eyes at night.
