Floor Mirrors

Leaning beats mounting in three specific cases. First, when you rent — no drilling, no wall patching on move-out day. Second, when you like rearranging — a leaned mirror shifts between bedroom, entryway, or dressing area in seconds; a mounted one stays put. Third, when the wall can't take it — plasterboard with no stud in the right spot, brick that needs masonry anchors, or heritage walls you don't want to damage. Leaning does have trade-offs: you lose about 15-20cm of floor space in front of the mirror, the mirror angles slightly downward (changes the reflection height for outfit-checking), and you need stable flooring. Mount if the mirror lives permanently in one room, if you want to reclaim floor space, or if the mirror is very heavy (over 30kg) where leaning becomes a topple risk. For most full-length mirrors under 30kg, leaning is the simpler, more flexible choice.

Three fixes, layered from least to most permanent. First, use the anti-slip pads or felt furniture pads on the bottom edge of the mirror. They grip hard floors (timber, vinyl, tile) and prevent the base sliding while the top tilts out. Second, add a safety tether — a small wire or strap behind the mirror attached to a wall hook or into a stud. This is our recommended baseline for any mirror over 20kg, especially in earthquake-prone NZ homes. Third, for mirrors you want genuinely secure (in kids' rooms, rental accommodation, or homes with pets), screw a low-profile L-bracket into the wall and slot the top of the mirror behind it — the mirror still leans visually but cannot fall forward. Yes — and layering is one of the best design moves a floor mirror enables. The classic pairings: a full-length mirror behind a small velvet bench in an entryway, behind a console table with lamps on top, behind a rounded ottoman or pouf in a living room, or behind an armchair in a bedroom reading corner. The mirror catches light above the furniture, creates visual depth, and fills wall height without committing to a permanent mount. For layering to work, the furniture in front should be around half the height of the mirror — a 45cm bench in front of a 180cm mirror keeps the top two-thirds of the reflection visible. Wider is fine; the mirror's job when layered isn't outfit-checking, it's bouncing light and adding atmosphere. Frameless mirrors (Gabriel, Monarch X, Cascade X) layer most elegantly because there's no visible frame to compete with the furniture in front.

Two mirrors share the 220 x 120cm top slot: Louis (arched) and Lowen X (rectangular). Both are full-wall statement pieces designed for tall-ceiling homes (2.7m+), entryway hallways, and main living rooms. Both weigh 45kg — the heaviest in our range — which means two-person lifting and secure anchoring if mounted. For leaning placement, 45kg at 220cm tall needs a safety tether and anti-slip pads at minimum. Below these two, the Grandeur range (X, Alba, Aurelia — arched, 200 x 100cm, 42kg) and Aldren range (X, Alba, Aurelia — rectangular, 200 x 100cm, 28kg) are the next step down. Aldren is 14kg lighter than Grandeur for the same footprint because of thinner glass (5mm vs 5mm on Grandeur too, but Aldren's frame is lighter aluminium). For a true full-wall impact without the weight, Aldren Alba at 28kg is the practical flagship.

Bare mirror edges can scratch timber or vinyl if the mirror is dragged or slides while you're moving it. C&F floor mirrors ship with felt pads or bumpers on the base edge specifically to prevent this — make sure they're seated correctly before placing the mirror on hard flooring. If the pads wear down over time (typical after 2-3 years of heavy movement), replace them with standard furniture felt pads from any hardware store. On carpet or rugs, scratching isn't a concern, but the mirror can sink into deep pile carpet and tilt — place a thin plywood or MDF base pad (cut slightly smaller than the mirror footprint) between the mirror and the carpet to distribute weight. On tile or stone flooring, always use the felt pads — those surfaces are harder than the mirror's metal base trim and can chip it over time.

Leaning mirrors do carry earthquake risk in NZ — they can topple during moderate-to-strong shaking, and a 45kg mirror falling on a person is a serious injury risk. Three precautions to take. First, always install a safety tether — a short wire or strap from the back of the mirror to a wall anchor (ideally into a stud, not just plasterboard). Any mirror over 20kg should have this regardless of location. Second, check the base stability — the mirror should not rock when you gently push the top; if it rocks, the pads need adjustment or the floor is uneven and the mirror needs a stabilising shim. Third, avoid leaning mirrors in bedrooms directly next to beds, above children's sleeping areas, or in narrow hallways where a fall would block exit. For very high earthquake-zone concern, mount the mirror to the wall properly — our mounting hardware is included.
