Every mirror spec table has one quiet number that most shoppers skip straight past: the thickness of the glass. It sits there between the dimensions and the frame material, usually 3mm, 4mm or 5mm, and almost nobody explains what it actually changes. So here is the honest version. Thickness matters, but not in the way most sales copy implies. It will not make your reflection more accurate on its own, and a well made 3mm mirror will beat a poorly made 5mm one every day of the week. What thickness really buys you is stiffness, presence and headroom as mirrors get bigger. What does mirror glass thickness actually change?
Three things, in order of how much you will notice them.
Stiffness. Glass bends. Not much, but enough to matter in a mirror, because a mirror doubles the visual effect of any curve in its surface. A panel that flexes by a fraction of a millimetre across its span can stretch or squash your reflection in ways a window never would. Stiffness is where thickness earns its keep, and it earns it fast: the bending stiffness of a glass panel grows with the cube of its thickness. Move from 3mm to 5mm and the panel is roughly four and a half times stiffer, not two thirds stiffer as the raw numbers suggest.
Weight. Flat glass weighs about 2.5kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness. A 180 x 80cm panel is 1.44 square metres, so the glass alone runs about 11kg at 3mm, 14kg at 4mm and 18kg at 5mm, before the frame and backing board join the party. That weight shapes everything downstream: how the mirror hangs, what wall anchors it needs, and how planted it feels leaning against a bedroom wall.
Feel. This one is subjective but real. A thicker panel in a big mirror simply feels more substantial when you move it, and it sits with more authority. It is the difference you notice when you tilt a mirror and it moves as one calm object rather than shivering slightly on the way.
Notice what is missing from that list: reflection quality. Sharpness and colour accuracy come from how flat the glass is and how well it is silvered, which is a separate conversation we cover in our single vs double silver guide. Thickness supports flatness at scale. It does not create it.
Why thickness matters more as mirrors get bigger
The right question is never "is 3mm too thin" in the abstract. It is "how far does this glass have to span, and what is holding it true along the way". A 3mm panel over a modest span, bonded to a rigid backing board inside a frame, stays flat because the board and frame are doing structural work alongside the glass. Stretch the same 3mm across a two metre panel with more of its area unsupported and you are asking a lot more of it.
That is why thickness climbs with size in any honestly built range. Small and mid sized mirrors do not need 5mm glass, and paying for it there buys you weight, not quality. Very large mirrors do need it, because at 200cm and beyond, span is the enemy and stiffness is the answer. One detail worth knowing about the top tier: our 5mm mirrors are also made with low iron glass, marketed on the product pages as ultra clear. That is not an upsell flourish. Standard float glass carries a faint green tint from its iron content, and the tint builds with the distance light travels through the glass, so it shows more in thicker panels. The tempered twist: why thin tempered glass is a different conversation
Everything above assumes ordinary annealed float glass, the kind that comes off the float line flat and stays as it cooled. Tempered glass, called toughened here and in the UK trade, goes back through a roughly 620 degree reheat and a rapid air quench to gain strength, and that process is where flatness gets negotiated. The soft glass sags slightly between the ceramic rollers that carry it through the furnace, and the quench freezes those waves in place.
Here is the connection to thickness, and it is the part almost nobody mentions: the industry flatness tolerances for tempering are at their most generous on thin glass. Roller wave of up to half a millimetre is permitted on glass from 3 to 5mm, with the allowance tightening as panels get thicker and stiffer. So a thin tempered panel combines the loosest flatness tolerance in the standard with the mirror effect that doubles every surface wave. That is why glass merchants here in NZ generally do not recommend toughened glass for mirrors at all. None of which means tempered glass is bad. It is genuinely several times stronger than annealed and it breaks into blunt fragments, which is exactly what you want in a shower screen or a balustrade. It is simply the wrong tool for a surface whose entire job is optical honesty. What to check on any spec table before you buy
Wherever you end up buying, five things tell you most of what thickness alone cannot:
1. Is the thickness listed at all? A retailer confident in their glass says so. If the spec table skips it, ask. Silence on thickness is usually not an accident.
2. Thickness relative to size. 3mm at 160 x 60cm with a solid backing is honest engineering. The same glass stretched across a doorway sized panel deserves a harder look at what supports it.

4. The silvering. Single silver, double silver or low iron changes colour accuracy and lifespan more than a millimetre of glass ever will.
5. The word tempered on a mirror. Not a defect, but a flag to look closer at flatness, for all the reasons above. For a furniture mirror in an NZ home, it is also usually unnecessary by law.

Match the glass to the span, insist on knowing what supports it, and spend your remaining budget on the things that change what you actually see: flatness, silvering and low iron glass at scale. Frequently asked questions
Is 3mm glass too thin for a full length mirror?
Not when the mirror is engineered around it. A 3mm panel bonded to a rigid backing board inside a supporting frame stays flat and true at standard full length sizes, which is exactly how our Zenith and Nocturne mirrors are built. Where 3mm deserves scepticism is on very large panels, or in mirrors where thin glass is left to span big areas without a board behind it.
What is the standard mirror glass thickness in NZ?
Most furniture mirrors sold in NZ run between 3 and 5mm, with full length mirrors most commonly at 4mm and large formats at 5mm. There is no single required thickness for a furniture mirror. The useful habit is simpler: check that the retailer states the thickness at all, then judge it against the size of the panel.
Does thicker glass give a better reflection?
Not by itself. Reflection quality comes from the flatness of the glass and the quality of the silvering behind it. Thickness supports flatness on large spans, which is why big mirrors benefit from it, but a well made small mirror in 3mm will reflect as honestly as a flagship. One real optical effect of thickness: standard float glass shows more green tint as it gets thicker, which is why our 5mm mirrors use low iron glass.
How heavy is a full length mirror?
Glass weighs about 2.5kg per square metre per millimetre of thickness. A 180 x 80cm mirror carries roughly 11 to 18kg of glass depending on tier, plus frame and backing, and our 200 x 100cm floor mirrors arrive around 32kg all up. Weight decides your wall anchors and whether a leaner needs an anti tip strap, so check it before delivery day, not after.
Is 5mm always better than 4mm?
No. At 180cm and below, 4mm gives you all the stiffness the span needs, and the extra millimetre would mostly buy weight. From 200cm up, the cube law of stiffness makes 5mm genuinely worth it, which is why our flagship large formats carry it. Pay for thickness where span demands it, and put the difference toward better silvering or low iron glass instead.
